Position Opening: Manager of Operations and Technology, BioOne

The Manager of Operations and Technology is a vital technical position within the BioOne organization, reporting to the Director of Operations and Technology and working closely with all other staff and our external partners. Though broad in scope and encompassing numerous responsibilities, the primary directive of this position is to manage the day-to-day technology and operations for the BioOne Complete platform and all databases.

A priority of this position is to organize, improve and carryout behind the scenes infrastructure. This position is also an essential part of the welfare and management of our content platform. This role will report and liaise with our platform partner regarding bugs, enhancements and daily tasks. As a nonprofit, mission-driven organization, it is a role that is involved with all aspects of BioOne operations and offers a variety of responsibilities.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Manager of Operations and Technology is responsible and accountable for the platforms, databases and operations software, but may also take the lead in managing vendor/affiliate organization relationships as needed. In this role, the Operations and Project Manager will:

  • Be responsible for management and care of the Customer, Content and Reporting databases.
  • Acts as point person for content questions and errors, correcting files/ records or escalating as necessary.
  • Manual corrections of XML and reloading during failure/regression or problems.
  • Manage improvement and enhancement projects for operations and database improvements
  • Manages the technical transition for incoming/outgoing journals. (DOIs, ISSN, FTP, registrations, platform page creation)
  • Supports the staff with technical expertise to support their work with publishers and libraries.
  • Registration, management and troubleshooting of DOIs.
  • Manages process and workflow for content delivery and online publishing.
  • Manages indexing partners
  • Creates new subscription types and matching products for the upcoming year.
  • Management of the ecommerce technology
  • Answers end user questions about access, reporting, navigation for the content platform.
  • Support and provided data for special projects and requests.
  • Train staff on internal systems and processes.
  • Manage platform enhancements, bugs and tasks requests in Jira
  • Liaise with content host in regards to technical development, customer support, platform changes and updates.
  • Work with Director of Operations and Technology to prioritize development, enhancements and technical projects
  • Manage and lead special strategy projects

Skills and Experience

  • 2-3 years experience in scholarly and digital publishing
  • Basic technical understanding of publishing (XML, FTP, DOI, HTML, Authentication)
  • BA required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self-starter
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Patient and flexible with the ability to be diplomatic
  • Commitment to creating a more competitive scholarly communication marketplace
  • Project Management experience a plus

Position details

Remote work is possible, but some travel will be required to attend meetings located in the Washington, DC area.
