Washington, D.C. USA – INRAE and BioOne announced the signing of a three-year agreement for participation in BioOne’s Subscribe to Open pilot program from 2026 through 2028. This agreement supports the shared goals of sustainable and equitable scholarly communications and expanding open access to scientific research.

BioOne’s Subscribe to Open pilot brings together 71 journals from 54 societies, museums, and research organizations worldwide into a conditional open access framework — representing the largest number of independent publishers under a single S2O offer to date. This agreement ensures that all INRAE scientists maintain reading access to the full BioOne Complete’s collection of over 230,000 biological sciences articles while simultaneously advancing open access objectives. Success of this pilot will also connect INRAE researchers with expanded audiences throughout the international biosciences community.

The Subscribe to Open model provides a practical path to publishing participating journals’ current contents open access while safeguarding subscription revenues which sustain scholarly publications. S2O is a conditional and collaborative model: with sufficient subscriber support current contents will be published open access, providing readers permanent access to critical research and scholarship.

“We appreciate INRAE’s dedication to equitable publishing,” said Christine Orr, BioOne’s Senior Director of Business and Community Development. “With this commitment of support for the length of the S2O pilot, INRAE is helping to sustain the nonprofit societies, museums, university presses, and independent publishers that produce the critical research in BioOne Complete. INRAE has been a longtime partner of BioOne, and we share their desire to advance equitable access to science.”

Odile Hologne, head of the Directorate for Open Science remarked “Through this partnership with BioOne INRAE reaffirms its commitment to bibliodiversity and the transformation of the scientific communications system towards greater openness and equity.”

Throughout the S2O pilot, BioOne Complete will be a mixed model collection of 219 subscribed, S2O, and OA titles. With sufficient support from subscribing libraries, current-year content of the 71 S2O titles will be made open access. If the sustainability threshold is not met, that content will remain available only to subscribers. Supporting subscribers exclusively benefit from access to all current and backfile content from both S2O and gated titles.

BioOne and INRAE are proud to advance our shared vision of creating a more accessible scientific ecosystem while ensuring the sustainability of both nonprofit publishers and libraries.
