BioOne Expands Content with New E-Book, Additional Full-Text Journals

BioOneTM (www.BioOne.org), the Web-based aggregation of research in the biological, ecological and environmental sciences, today announced two major enhancements to its content: an e-book to be produced in partnership with the American Society of Plant Biologists, and the licensing of an additional ten highly-cited, peer-reviewed journals. BioOne, which exceeds 100,000 pages, will shortly include the full texts of 55 journals from 44 scientific societies and institutions.

BioOne’s e-book partnership with the American Society of Plant Biologists will result in the production beginning this summer of The Arabidopsis Book (TAB), a fully electronic resource. TAB is an attempt at a fresh mode of communication among researchers and an original model for scientific publishing. TAB will debut as a compilation of over 100 invited chapters, each reviewing in detail an important and interesting aspect of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Working in conjunction with BioOne, which will serve as the technical platform for the book, providing the creation of SGML, links and hosting , ASPB will launch TAB as a dynamic information resource that will evolve with the state of knowledge.

The editors of TAB, Chris Somerville (Carnegie Institute of Washington) and Elliot Meyerowitz (California Institute of Technology), envision evolution of the book’s format as well as its contents. Initially this will be done by taking advantage of hyperlinks, which will be added to cross-reference gene names and references to other chapters, and which will eventually lead from each gene and sequence reference to sequence databases, and from each paper cited to its abstract. Once completed, TAB will become a complementary resource to the many databases that contain specific information about Arabidopsis. TAB will be available via the BioOne site, and will be available free of charge under an open-access arrangement.

BioOne marked another important milestone in the fourteen months since its debut with the licensing of its 55th journal. Among the most recent set of journals which has licensed content to BioOne:

The American Fern Journal (The American Fern Society)
The Southeastern Naturalist (Association of Southeastern Biologists and the Humboldt Field Research Institute)
The Journal of Field Ornithology (Association of Field Ornithologists)
The Journal of Insect Science (The University of Arizona)
Journal of Vegetation Science (International Association for Vegetation Science)
Journal of Applied Vegetation Science (International Association for Vegetation Science)
Journal of Coastal Conservation (European Union for Coastal Conservation)
Folia Geobotanica (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic)
Micropaleontology (Micropaleontology Press, American Museum of Natural History)
Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science (Kansas Academy of Science)

As with all content on the BioOne site, journals are fully linked, both within the collection and to a variety of external sources. In addition to its offering of the full texts of 55 journals from 44 societies, BioOne has now produced 288 volumes of 689 issues of these journals, featuring articles from 35,090 authors.
