Dear BioOne Subscriber,
I am pleased to announce an important new initiative by BioOne in collaboration with JSTOR.
Many of BioOne’s subscribers and publishers have expressed interest in a program for preserving the back issues of BioOne journals and making the content accessible to online researchers. BioOne has been exploring options, and I am now pleased to announce that we will be working collaboratively with JSTOR, a not-for-profit organization founded on a mission to create and preserve a digital archive of important scientific journals. We decided to work with JSTOR as they have superior resources, expertise and standards for large-scale retrospective digital conversion projects.
As you may know, JSTOR already includes a number of BioOne titles in its archive. They are now going to extend an invitation to all journals currently available in BioOne to participate in their forthcoming Biological Sciences Collection. As part of this invitation, JSTOR will undertake the digitization of back issues, from Volume 1, Issue 1, at no cost to our publishers, from which we expect a high degree of participation.
By establishing this relationship with JSTOR for journal backfiles, BioOne can and will continue to focus on enriching our current database and the features and functionality of our site. Also, BioOne will be working with JSTOR and our other technology partners to create robust linking between the JSTOR and BioOne sites, to enable researchers to easily navigate between the back and current issues.
Of course, a program of this magnitude will take several years to complete. Both BioOne and JSTOR will keep the library community aware of our progress and the availability of backfiles, as well as access options.
If you have questions about this program, or how it might affect your library’s acquisition and archiving plans, as always, feel free to contact me directly at any time. More information about the program is avaliable at BioOne’s JSTOR FAQ.
Best regards,
Heather Joseph
