Dear BioOne Community,
While it wasn’t the most restful summer on record, the BioOne team remains energized and excited for the months ahead. After nearly two years of preparatory efforts, the 2026 renewal cycle has begun, offering early glimpses of global library support for our Subscribe to Open pilot.
The inaugural offer, launching in January, includes 71 titles from 54 scientific societies and nonprofit publishers around the world. Unlike other approaches that might cut libraries out of the value chain, S2O relies on the collaboration and support of the library community. We are lucky to have these long-term partnerships in spades, and are heartened by the opportunity to deepen them through this new shared endeavor. For example, we recently announced a five-year agreement with the University of California system, covering the entirety of our S2O pilot term.
On September 16 we’ll be holding a webinar on S2O featuring a star-studded lineup of library and publisher speakers. We hope you’ll join us (it will be recorded, too!). We’d also welcome the chance to visit with you during this fall conference season. Check our conference calendar and let us know if we’ll see you at Frankfurt, Charleston, or a host of other events. Whether virtually or in person, we value the opportunity to celebrate, and to learn from, this special community.
In partnership,

Lauren Kane
President/CEO
Upcoming Webinar: Advancing Sustainable OA in the Biosciences Community
For more than 25 years BioOne has believed in a more collaborative, equitable, and sustainable scholarly communications system, and delivered critical content from our community of non-profit society publishers to a worldwide audience. We are proud to introduce a Subscribe to Open pilot which will further benefit researchers in the biological, environmental, and ecological sciences by providing a path to greater open access.
Our S2O pilot will span 2026 – 2028, and include 71 titles from 54 society publishers, including the first S2O titles from Japan, China, Kenya, and Brazil. Via Subscribe to Open, all current-year content from these titles will publish open access if subscription revenue meets the year’s sustainability threshold – all without APCs.
Join members of the BioOne library and publisher community on Tuesday September 16 to explore how this model aligns with BioOne’s mission and values, supports nonprofit publishers and their authors, and helps libraries meet both financial and research-centered aims. Attendees will also learn how libraries and consortia can participate, how to gauge impact and value of S2O offers, and have ample time to ask questions while contributing to this important discussion.
Speakers will include:
- Robin N. Sinn, Interim Associate University Librarian, Iowa State University
- Jill Emery, Professor, Collection Development & Management Librarian, Portland State University
- Dr. Lucy Kerhoulas, Editor in Chief, Northwest Science
- Dr. Benjamín van Ee Smit, Editor, Caribbean Journal of Science
- Dr. Taran Grant, Editor in Chief, South American Journal of Herpetology
- Christine Orr, Senior Director of Business and Community Development, BioOne
- Meredith Pond, Publisher and Partnerships Manager, BioOne
