Dear BioOne Community,

As the new academic year begins and our planning shifts towards the year ahead, we remain focused on a 2024 that has been nothing short of momentous. This is especially fitting given that this year marks a special milestone for BioOne—our 25th anniversary! To commemorate how far we have come as an organization, we’ve created a celebratory video that highlights the power of community and some of the extraordinary leaders who have supported us along the way. Thank you for celebrating with us as we reflect on a quarter-century of advancing sustainable scholarly communication.

More reason to celebrate—with still a month to go before we finalize our inaugural Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot cohort, we already have 40 titles from 30 societies and independent publishers on board. We are heartened by the support received thus far from BioOne’s publishing community and library supporters, underscoring our collective commitment to a more sustainable, equitable, and open future.

With September comes the start of a busy conference season, and the BioOne team will be at an array of events–in person and virtually–to promote our strategic progress. Check our conference calendar and let us know if we’ll see you there. These gatherings provide invaluable opportunities for us to connect with community members, partners, and peers, share our learnings, and explore new ways to collaborate.

In partnership,

Subscribe to Open Pilot Bolstered by Strong Publisher Commitments

We are delighted to share the growing list of publishing partners who have committed to our 2026 Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot. To date, 40 titles from 31 societies, museums, and independent presses have confirmed their participation, with up to 30 more eligible to join throughout the 2024 signup year. The effort represents a significant opportunity for BioOne to more broadly and equitably provide access to critical content while ensuring a sustainable source of revenue for its independent journal publishers. A current list of S2O pilot publishers and associated titles is available on our website and will be continuously updated with new additions throughout 2024. The final participant list will be shared with our library community in early 2025 for a 2026 pilot term start. BioOne Complete will remain a single, mixed-model collection of subscribed, S2O, and gold OA titles.

Publishing Highlights

2025 BioOne Complete Collection Updates

BioOne is proud to announce the addition of Invertebrate Biology to the BioOne Complete collection for 2025. Invertebrate Biology, a publication of the American Microscopical Society, will include all issues from v.119 (2000) through the present, and complement the aggregation’s more than 227,000 articles and 1.6 million pages, growing each year.

With this addition, BioOne Complete will offer 219 full-text journals from 157 leading scientific societies and independent presses worldwide. This includes concentrations in core subject areas such as entomology, biodiversity conservation, and zoology, as well as coverage of interdisciplinary topics like the effects of climate change, invasive species, and agriculture and plant sciences. This high-quality collection remains essential for library partners, with 60% of current titles only available in rich XML via BioOne, and per-title costs 74% lower than commercial titles.

The BioOne Complete Archive will expand coverage in 2025 to include all subscribed content published from 1996 through 2020, growing to more than 201,000 articles. The BioOne Complete Archive is available for one-time purchase, giving flexibility to new and existing library partners who wish to add this content to their permanent digital holdings.

The 2025 title lists for all options and other librarian resources are available for download on the BioOne Complete website.
