Dear BioOne Community,
It’s our favorite time of year – when BioOne distributes its annual royalty sharing to our community of society and independent publishing participants. Over the past two decades, BioOne has proudly returned more than $78 million to these partners, reinvesting in the scholarly ecosystem and supporting sustainable nonprofit publishing.
This commitment would not be possible without the unwavering support of the library community. BioOne Complete subscribers recognize that 64% of net subscription dollars are returned to stakeholders–not shareholders–enabling scientific research, conservation, and education efforts around the world. Now more than ever, this financial support is critical as small societies and journals navigate today’s developing challenges.
As we work together to sustain independent scientific communication, we also seek to magnify its impact. We are proud to recognize five exceptional early-career researchers as our 2025 BioOne Ambassador Award recipients for advancing public understanding in science. Dig into these award-winning submissions and help us celebrate the next generation of scientific communicators.
With appreciation,

Lauren Kane

BioOne Ambassadors represent the next generation of excellence in scientific communication— where complex research findings are made accessible, driving both scientific advancement and informed public discourse.
“Highlighting early-career voices through the BioOne Ambassador Award creates an environment which gives them the confidence to pursue their passion and produces a generation of scientists who can effectively communicate their work, and the broader significance of science, to their colleagues, their wider community, and their own students when the time comes. By demystifying science, they are paving the way for greater understanding of science as a whole, the role it plays in our lives and engagement by the wider community. They are the future of science.”

Community Highlights
S2O: Building Support in the Library Community
Our Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot for BioOne Complete is currently being rolled out to our library community in order to build support for the initial subscription term of 2026. This follows a year of collaboration with our publishers during which we garnered commitments from 71 titles across 54 publisher partners to offer their titles under this model.
Outreach includes dedicated webinars for key library consortia partners to discuss the exclusive subscriber benefits, share information on how Subscribe to Open meets library criteria for acquisitions, and to understand how this new model for BioOne Complete meets common values. We invite you to watch for our upcoming informational webinar later this year, which will provide deeper insights into this innovative model.
We are also actively connecting on the conference circuit: in March, Christine Orr joined representatives from NERL, University of Minnesota Libraries, Project Muse, and the American Physiological Society at the Electronic Resources in Libraries (ER&L) conference to present “Make it So: Implementing Subscribe to Open.” This session shared the practicalities of the model, and served as an important opportunity to educate and engage with librarians who are responsible for acquiring S2O resources. Lauren Kane will also be discussing S2O at the forthcoming SSP conference in “Non-profits Navigating the Storm: Now Non-APC Models are Becoming a Lifeline for Non-profit Publishing Sustainability.”
“Consortia working with publishers in a partnership allows us to leverage the talent at our member universities so that they can create the future that they want to see. And what they want to see is more open content, more transformative content.”

Library support is essential to the success of this pilot: if we reach our sustainability target, 2026 content from participating journals will become openly accessible worldwide. If targets aren’t met, that content remains exclusively available to subscribers as before. BioOne’s S2O model is deliberately designed to preserve value for our subscribers: backfile content will remain gated, continuing to serve as a significant benefit for subscribing institutions.
For libraries, the process remains seamless. Throughout the 2026 S2O pilot period, BioOne Complete will continue as a unified collection of gated, Subscribe to Open, and gold Open Access titles. The subscription process and experience will remain unchanged—institutions will subscribe annually to BioOne Complete just as they do now. Our team will focus on collaborating with our library community, ensuring the value proposition and mission behind S2O are clearly understood.
For comprehensive information about S2O, including answers to frequently asked questions, please visit our dedicated Subscribe to Open webpage. Or, connect with us at Sales@BioOne.org to request a meeting to discuss how your library can participate.
Together, we can create a more accessible scholarly ecosystem while preserving the sustainability that benefits our entire community.
Growing Resources for Entomologists
Researchers focused on insect biology will find even more resources in the ESA eBook Collection from BioOne eBooks this year. Following our news about the CSIRO Publishing BioSelect Collection expanding by 15 titles in 2025, we’re pleased to also share additional growth in our entomology offerings.
The ESA eBook Collection from the Entomological Society of America will welcome two valuable new additions, and licensees will receive access immediately upon publication. These new titles, including Handbook of Wood Boring Insects of Ornamental Trees and Shrubs in the Eastern United States and Atlas of the Heteropteran (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera) Pterothorax Endoskeleton, complement the existing ESA eBook Collection, creating an even more robust resource for institutions supporting entomological research.
These expanded offerings reflect BioOne’s ongoing commitment to providing specialized scholarly resources that meet the evolving needs of our research community.
