In This Issue:

Dear BioOne Community,

As you likely have already heard, BioOne celebrated a significant milestone last month, meeting its 2026 Subscribe to Open sustainability threshold.

This achievement means that the 2026 volumes of 71 titles from 54 society and independent publishers will be made Open Access, immediately and in perpetuity. Zooming out, this success signifies something even more impactful — the transformative power of library-publisher collaboration to strengthen the nonprofit publishing ecosystem.

Two years ago, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of BioOne’s founding. This year in turn marks a quarter-century of BioOne’s flagship journal aggregation, now known as BioOne Complete. Over the past twenty-five years, this collection has connected researchers around the world with rigorous, independent scholarship in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. What began as a bold experiment in community-centered publishing has grown into an indispensable resource — and it has done so because of the enduring commitment of the societies, research organizations, institutions, consortia, and funders who have championed it.

We are humbled and energized by this support, and look forward to many more milestones to come.

In partnership,

Lauren Kane

BioOne’s Subscribe to Open Pilot Reaches 2026 Sustainability Threshold

We’re thrilled to share that our inaugural Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot has reached its inaugural sustainability threshold, meaning the 2026 content from 71 journals in the BioOne Complete aggregation will be fully Open Access. This milestone would not have been possible without the generous support of our library and consortia partners around the world, and we are deeply grateful.

Our S2O cohort of 54 societies, museums, and research organizations is the largest group of independent publishers under a single S2O offer to date, and we’re especially excited to welcome first-time S2O publishers from Japan, Kenya, China, and Brazil. By leveraging existing subscription funds and workflows, this model allows us to expand access to critical research while continuing to reinvest library dollars back into our community of society and nonprofit publishers — keeping scholarly communication sustainable. We look forward to building on this momentum in the years ahead.

INRAE and BioOne Sign 3-Year Subscribe to Open Agreement

The partnership between INRAE and BioOne demonstrates how collaboration advances our shared values including equity and sustainability. With their three-year agreement supporting BioOne’s Subscribe to Open pilot, INRAE secures access to BioOne Complete’s collection encompassing 230,000+ articles for its researchers and actively helps to sustain the independent nonprofit societies, museums, and publishers that produce that research.

INRAE joins the many mission-aligned BioOne library and consortia partners who have committed their support for the duration of BioOne’s S2O pilot through 2028.

Through this partnership with BioOne INRAE reaffirms its commitment to bibliodiversity and the transformation of the scientific communications system towards greater openness and equity.

Our Mission in Action: Celebrating 25 Years of BioOne Complete

BioOne Complete logo. 25 years.

BioOne Complete launched in 2001 and today provides access to more than 200 titles in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

When BioOne Complete first launched 25 years ago, it did something genuinely new. When scientific publishing was consolidating around large commercial players, BioOne offered an alternative in establishing a community-centered aggregation focused around the needs of researchers, publishers, and libraries. Twenty-five years later, that vision has grown into a trusted resource in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

In that first year, the BioOne aggregation included 42 journals and reached just over 300 libraries. Now the collection encompasses 219 journals, and the collection is accessed by 5,500 institutions spread across 150 countries. But what has always distinguished BioOne Complete in the industry is the innovative business model, reinvesting library subscription funds back into nonprofit publishers, helping them remain independent and mission-driven in an era when so many society journals have been absorbed by large commercial houses.

Shared Vision, .

Many of BioOne Complete’s original founding publishers remain active partners today — a testament to the enduring relationships that have shaped the platform from the very beginning.

Community Highlights

Meet the Researchers Shaping the Future of Science Communication

Now in its ninth year, the BioOne Ambassador Award celebrates the next generation of excellence in science communication, recognizing the work of early-career researchers in the BioOne community and accelerating the dissemination of their research to a broader audience. Communication remains central to advancing BioOne’s mission to maximize access to scientific research, and this program reflects our ongoing commitment to the researchers behind it.

As we look forward to announcing the 2026 BioOne Ambassadors in April, we invite you to explore the outstanding research of all our 2026 nominees in this special collection. This year we are proud to spotlight work from journals spanning ornithology, wildlife diseases, herpetology, shellfish biology, and entomology — representing the remarkable breadth of biological science published across the BioOne Complete platform. All articles in the 2026 BioOne Ambassador Awards Nominee Research Collection are free to read through June 30, 2026, with thanks to our participating publishers.

From a Fishing Boat in Alaska to the Frontlines of Raptor Conservation

Behind every research paper is a human story of curiosity, dedication, and discovery. Our latest Publisher Profile highlights one such story — that of Dr. James F. Dwyer, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Raptor Research, published by the Raptor Research Foundation.

Dr. Dwyer’s journey began on a fishing boat off the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, where a single observation about declining fish stocks sparked a lifetime commitment to conservation. This Publisher Profile explores how a global society of raptor scientists and conservationists across the world is working to protect birds of prey from an ever-growing array of threats, and why getting the latest science into the right hands has never been more urgent. He also offers insights into how the Subscribe to Open pilot with BioOne is breaking down barriers to access for researchers and wildlife managers around the globe.

I was mesmerized by an ornithology class. I began working with birds and eventually became involved with the Raptor Research Foundation (RRF) while researching and working to prevent the electrocution of Harris’s Hawks in Arizona.

BioOne Connects with the Global Community: Recent Events and What’s Ahead

BioOne has been busy engaging with partners and colleagues at industry events around the world, with more conversations on the horizon.

Earlier this year, Senior Director of Business and Community Development Christine Orr represented BioOne at Charleston Asia, continuing the conversations around sustainable open access. Christine participated in the Subscribe to Open Community of Practice panel, joining colleagues from the American Physiological Society, Annual Reviews, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to discuss the basics of the S2O model, varieties of implementation, and how the model aligns with stakeholder needs worldwide.

Looking ahead, the BioOne team has a busy conference season on the calendar.

Field Notes

BioOne Voices Contribute to Landmark Open Access Report

Knowledge Exchange recently released the report Small European Publishers and the Transition to Open Access Publishing: A 2025 Snapshot, a study examining the challenges and opportunities small European publishers face in transitioning to open access. BioOne is proud to have contributed to this work through two members of our community. BioOne Board member Ans ter Woerds, served on the Knowledge Exchange Task and Finish Group and Meredith Pond, Associate Director of Publishing, participated in the report’s focus group.

The report’s findings will resonate across the BioOne community. While small publishers broadly share a strong commitment to open access principles, the report identifies inequities of scale, not lack of will, as the most significant barrier to a sustainable transition, calling on funders, libraries, consortia, and policymakers to play an active role in driving systemic change.
