Dear BioOne Community,
As I write this, it’s just a few weeks until 2025. It’s a time to look forward, to reflect back, and focus on the opportunities ahead.
At BioOne, there is much to reflect on and appreciate as we reflect on the past year. In 2024 we celebrated BioOne’s 25th anniversary, and with it, the enduring importance of our mission and steadfast support of stakeholders like you. We expanded our offerings with the launch of BioOne Connect and a new partner eBook collection, fostering connections among our stakeholders in meaningful new ways. And we were astounded by the early support for BioOne’s Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot, which will include 71 titles from 54 independent publishers across 12 countries.
None of this work would be possible without the extraordinary efforts of the BioOne staff and strategic leadership of the BioOne Board of Directors. In particular, I’d like to recognize the great Jim Williams, who concludes his service on the BioOne Board after more than two decades of indelible contributions. Jim’s passion and vision – on display in our anniversary video – will continue to inspire for many years to come.
Looking to the year ahead, there is much work to be done and many unknowns. Yet whatever challenges we face, or new roads we forge, we stand secure in the knowledge that collaboration will remain at the heart of all that we do. On behalf of all of us at BioOne, thank you for being part of this incredible community.
With warm wishes for the holiday season and a happy, healthy 2025 ahead,

Lauren Kane

Over 50 Independent Publishers Commit to BioOne Subscribe to Open Pilot
Building on our mission to support sustainable scholarly publishing, we are proud to share that we will launch our Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot in January 2026, with 71 titles from 54 global societies, museums, and research organizations. This initiative marks a significant step forward for BioOne and the scholarly communications community, representing the largest group of independent publishers under a single S2O model and featuring the first S2O titles published in Japan, Brazil, China, and Kenya.
The initiative integrates subscribed, S2O, and gold OA titles into the BioOne Complete collection, supported by multi-year licenses from partners like the California Digital Library on behalf of the University of California System.
BioOne will work closely with libraries and consortia in 2025 to prepare for this groundbreaking shift in scholarly publishing.
In This Issue:
“We firmly believe that S2O embodies the forthcoming trajectory in academic journal evolution. We are pleased to engage in BioOne’s pilot and appreciate BioOne’s work in forging this path.”

Publishing Highlights
BioOne Connect Partner Showcase
The BioOne Connect Partner Showcase brought together BioOne’s publishing partners for an engaging and informative session on tools and services tailored to the needs of small, independent society publishers. The BioOne Connect program is a new initiative designed to provide access to trusted vendors at preferred rates. Recognizing that many industry solutions are often out of reach for smaller organizations, BioOne Connect bridges the gap by offering practical and affordable resources for publishing success.
The session featured lightning-round presentations from six BioOne Connect partners: Ex Ordo, Accucoms, Kriyadocs, SPIE, Molecular Connections, and Global Campus. Each partner shared insights into their services, from editorial workflow tools to marketing and sales solutions, and fielded questions from attendees during a lively Q&A. The showcase recording is now available, offering an opportunity for BioOne publishing partners to revisit the session or explore it for the first time.

Field Notes
New Study Highlights the Importance of Small, Independent Society Publications to Conservation Research
A recent study explored the critical role of conservation research published in specialized journals, including several from the BioOne community of partnering publishers. The paper emphasized that these journals serve as key outlets for baseline, species-specific monitoring data critical to informing conservation policy and practice. Journals like the American Fern Journal, Ichthyology & Herpetology, Pacific Science, Rangeland Ecology & Management, and Journal of Mammalogy, for example, are frequently cited for providing targeted, high-quality studies that serve as the backbone of biodiversity management efforts.
This study underscores the importance of BioOne’s mission, which supports a diverse publishing community dedicated to disseminating conservation-critical data. Many of these resources directly inform the conservation plans necessary to protect individual species and habitats. By prioritizing accessibility and sustainability, BioOne and our publishing partners ensure that vital species-specific insights reach policymakers, practitioners, and researchers alike, reinforcing their shared commitment to the advancement of global conservation efforts.
